BACKGROUND
Demographically, the Gracia Christian Education Institute was established and operates in Cikahurupan Sewan Village, RT 05 RW 05, Mekarsari Subdistrict, Neglasari District, Tangerang City, precisely to the west of Soekarno Hatta International Airport.
The majority of the population is ethnic Chinese, known as “Cina Benteng,” who have lived there for generations. In terms of welfare, the surrounding population is classified as underprivileged, often referred to as small traders, due to their limited skills and limited other abilities, as they have only received elementary school education. It’s not uncommon for the elderly to struggle to read and write fluently.
Those who are still underprivileged choose easy, low-skill jobs such as street vendors, mobile chicken noodle vendors, satay vendors, noodle vendors, domestic helpers, and even selling cakes in Jakarta and its surrounding areas. The underprivileged in this district are usually those who come from outside or have moved from Jakarta and choose to live in rentals for various reasons, such as evictions or considering the affordable housing prices.
Observing the conditions of poverty and hardship of the Sewan community in general is a direct result of their inability to compete in the modern workforce caused by weak skills / expertise or education. The community has been taught for generations to earn money by trading to help their parents at school age (play and learning age) so that most of them cannot continue their studies to the undergraduate level.
But now, with the passage of time and continuous enlightenment and encouragement given to them to support school-age children as the responsibility of parents, awareness is growing among the underprivileged community.
